In the increasingly competitive global environment, the competitiveness of economies as well as individual businesses will depend, to a large extent, on increasing skills levels in the labour market. Access to appropriate training and skills development is also key to achieving social equity.
BiGGAR Economics has established a growing consultancy practice in skills and training with areas of expertise including further education provision, labour market initiatives, national training programmes and the market for qualifications.
PROJECTS
- economic appraisal of a training facility aimed at providing the construction skills required for the Olympics;
- development of a funding model for Highlands and Islands Enterprise to ensure that public sector support for Skillseekers and Modern Apprenticeship programmes is transparent and consistent, reflects labour market conditions and takes account of differences across the region;
- a review and analysis of the market for qualifications, and in particular vocational qualifications, among private training providers and in-house company training provision for the Scottish Qualifications Authority;
- economic appraisal of proposals by Prospects College to develop a new college campus in Southend-on-Sea;
- an evaluation of the Scottish E-Skills Academy which is aimed at increasing the competitiveness of the Scottish economy by providing innovative training in e-skills for a range of key job roles;
- primary, secondary and tertiary education demand assessments for a number of localities and regions;
